The Science Behind Sasha

The HHS public access paper, published in the Journal of Steroid Biochemistry and Molecular Biology in 2014, describes hot flashes as a rapid and exaggerated heat dissipation response. A brain signal is initiated that travels down the spinal cord, and this travel requires an increase in temperature. This rise in temperature then impacts throughout the body, and the body’s response is to dissipate the increased temperature by: 

• Sweating 

• Increasing heart rate 

• Catecholamine response

This temperature increase is required for the hot flash to disseminate throughout the body. In layman terms, a likely analog is to think of the SASHA device as a lightning rod. As documented by the Department of Health and Human Services—for a hot flash to occur, there must first be a rise in core body temperature that allows an impulse to travel down the spinal cord.
